With winter weather quickly approaching and energy costs rising, it’s important to evaluate your home for air leaks. Leaks introduce unwanted air into your residence, while allowing warm air to escape. Sealing these leaks keeps your home cozy and lowers your heating bills.

Locating Air Leaks

To seal off air leaks, you must first find them. Look in the obvious places: around windows and doors. To test for leaks, close a piece of paper between the pane and the sill. If you can pull the paper out, the window is not sealed properly. Door bottoms are also common spots for air leaks. Additional overlooked locations are plumbing cut-outs, duct work, and outlets.

Founded by Andy and Melissa Mikulak, Max’s Ring of Fire honors their late son, Max—who courageously battled cancer until the age of seven. This year’s Touch-A-Truck event was held on June 4 at Torrey Pines High School in San Diego. Update on 2011 Tax Credit Changes

If you didn’t have a chance to replace your aging HVAC system during 2010, you may still be eligible for a 2011 tax break. While the $1,500 tax credit was only available through December 31, the federal government is offering a reduced energy tax credit (up to $500) in 2011. Here are the details:

1. The 2011 tax credit is only available to homeowners who have not previously received at least $500 in credits from prior years.

2. Qualifying improvements include furnaces, air conditioners, insulation, water heaters, roofs, windows and doors. Check with the Mauzy Heating and Air Conditioning team to find out which equipment is eligible.

3. The new tax credit law allows homeowners to claim up to 10 percent of installation costs, with deductions capping at $300 for AC units/heat pumps and $150 for furnaces.

If you’ve been thinking about giving yourself the gift of a new AC system or high-efficiency furnace this Christmas, now’s the time. Urging consumers to evaluate their home’s energy efficiency and enjoy the benefit of lower energy bills, the U.S. government is offering a federal tax credit for qualifying energy-efficient products installed before the end of the year.

THE DETAILS:

To qualify for the federal tax credit, you must have your product installed and “placed in service” by no later than Dec. 31, 2010. That’s only a month away!
Tax credits are only available when installing energy-efficient products or systems in an existing home that’s your principal residence. Unfortunately, tax credits don’t apply to rental properties and new construction.
According to the Department of Energy, qualifying products include “energy-efficient windows, insulation, doors, roofs, and heating & cooling equipment.”
The tax credit equals 30 percent of your total product cost, up to a maximum of $1,500.

Are Heat Pumps The Right Choice For You?

You may have heard about heat pumps, but weren’t quite sure how they worked or if they were right for your home.

Most heat pumps are split systems, with one coil indoors and one coil outdoors. In the heating process, the pump uses the air outside the home to evaporate a refrigerant in the outdoor coil. Heat from the outside air is extracted, and evaporates the liquid refrigerant in the coil, then converts the liquid refrigerant into a warm gas. The gas is compressed, and transferred from the outdoor coil to the indoor coil. Once indoors, the gas is released as heat that is distributed through the house using fans.

On the flip side, when the heat pump is working to cool your home, the ductwork and fans bring the warm air in the home to the compressor unit. The compressor unit then uses the same gas evaporation/compression process it uses to heat your home, but this time in reverse, to extract the warm air from the home and send it outside.
